Description

Art Nouveau Fireplace Tile Relief Moulded Majolica Bird William Godwin C1900

  • Maker: William Godwin (Lugwardine)
  • Period: c.1895–1905
  • Material: Glazed ceramic (majolica)
  • Technique: Dust-pressed relief mould
  • Design: Pictorial bird in foliage within framed border
  • Size: approx. 15.2cm x 15.2cm (6” x 6”)

A relief-moulded majolica tile by William Godwin, dating to circa 1900.

The design depicts a bird set within a naturalistic arrangement of branches and foliage, enclosed by an integrated border. The composition is pictorial, with a defined central subject rather than a repeating pattern.

This design is illustrated in Chris Blanchett, 20th Century Decorative British Tiles, Commercial Manufacturers A–H (p.258), where it is recorded as a 6-inch relief-moulded bird tile from circa 1900.

The glaze is applied in tones of brown, amber, and olive, with characteristic pooling in the recesses, enhancing the depth of the moulding.
