Minton

This section features our current stock of antique fireplace tiles produced by Minton and associated firms, dating from the early 19th through to the early 20th century. Founded in Staffordshire in 1793 by Thomas Minton, the company became one of the leading ceramic manufacturers of the Victorian period, producing a wide range of decorative wares including tiles, pottery, and architectural ceramics.

Minton tiles were produced under several related names, including Minton & Co, Mintons, and Minton, Hollins & Co, reflecting different partnerships and divisions within the business over time. The firm was particularly influential in the development of decorative tile production, including encaustic, moulded, and tube-lined examples used in both domestic and architectural settings.

Examples include a wide range of designs from classical and geometric patterns to Art Nouveau and naturalistic motifs, often finished in coloured glazes. Minton tiles were widely used in fireplace panels as well as in major public buildings, and remain among the most recognised and collected of all English tile manufacturers.
