This brass vesta case is decorated with a detailed embossed scene of a peacock standing amongst flowers, with fine surface work giving depth to the feathers and foliage. The design is arranged across both sides, with the bird forming the central motif.
The case retains a traditional hinged lid, which opens and closes well, along with a striker edge to the base for practical use.
The combination of subject matter and decorative technique is characteristic of Japanese metalwork of the late 19th to early 20th century.
Condition
Good condition for its age.
Visible signs of wear including small dents, light scratches, and a tiny split at the base near the striker. The lid functions correctly. Would benefit from cleaning but presented in original, as-found condition.
