George III Silver Vinaigrette John Shaw 1804
A fine Georgian sterling silver vinaigrette, made in Birmingham in 1804 by John Shaw. This is an early example of Shaw’s work, as he first registered his maker’s mark in 1803. He specialised in small silver wares such as snuff boxes, nutmeg graters, and vinaigrettes, remaining active until the late 1820s.
Compact and well-proportioned, the vinaigrette features a hinged outer lid enclosing a pierced grille, originally intended to hold a scented sponge. Pieces of this period are increasingly sought after for their charm, functionality, and clear hallmarks.

This attractive early 19th-century vinaigrette displays a plain, understated exterior typical of the Georgian period, opening to reveal a pierced inner grille. Such pieces were used to hold aromatic substances and were often carried as personal accessories.
The survival of crisp hallmarks and original components makes this a particularly pleasing example of early Birmingham silver.
