800 Silver Niello German Vesta Case Match Holder Checkerboard Martin Mayer 1890
An antique German 800 silver vesta case of rounded rectangular form with finely engine-turned checkerboard decoration across both sides and lid. The interior is gilt and the base retains its original ribbed striker.
Marked 800 with control mark and model number, and attributed to Martin Mayer.

The case is softly curved, rectangular, with a hinged lid and rounded edges. Both panels and the lid are decorated with a tight checkerboard engine-turned pattern, creating a uniform reflective surface.
The interior is gilt, typical of better-quality German silver vesta cases of the period. The base incorporates a ribbed striker. The hinge functions correctly, and the lid closes securely.
Marks to the inner rim include 800 for silver fineness, a control mark, and the number 64, likely a workshop or model reference.
Condition
Good antique condition.
Clear marks. Hinge in sound working order. Light surface wear and minor marks consistent with age and handling. Interior gilding is worn in places as expected. There was possibly a suspension ring, which appears to be missing.
No visible splits or repairs observed.
