Antique Italian 800 Solid Silver Hair Pin 1809 to 1824
In Italy, hairpins were significant symbols of a respectable married woman, highlighting her societal status. These accessories were traditionally worn during crucial life events, beginning with weddings and subsequently on holidays and other special occasions.
Flat hairpins, like the one exemplified here, were meticulously positioned at the back of the head to support intricate and heavily braided hairstyles popular among women of that era. The hairpin's decorative aspect often extended to the side of the face, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
A notable feature of this hairpin is its design, which consists of a hand delicately holding a flower at the top. This distinct motif is characteristic of the Campania region, particularly around Naples, and may hold amuletic significance, symbolising protection and good fortune.
