Description

Georgian Sterling Silver Cow Finial for Butter Dish Henry Wilkinson & Co 1833

A Georgian sterling silver butter dish finial in the form of a recumbent cow, by Henry Wilkinson & Co, hallmarked for Sheffield, date letter “L” for 1833.

Naturalistically modelled and finely textured, the cow is fitted with a threaded screw mount for attachment to a butter dish lid.

  • Maker: Henry Wilkinson & Co
  • Assay Office: Sheffield
  • Date Letter: “L” (1833)
  • Form: Butter dish lid finial, modelled as a cow
  • Measurements:
    -Length: approx. 6.5 cm
    -Width: approx. 3 cm

The cow is realistically cast and chased with detailed fur texturing throughout. The head is turned slightly, with curved horns and naturalistic facial modelling. The legs are folded beneath in a resting position.
