Scarce Solid Silver Book Slow Burn Vesta Case Sampson Mordan & Co 1881
A sterling silver book-form combination vesta case, made by Sampson Mordan & Co. This late Victorian example combines a slow-burning wick and a match holder with engraved decorative panels, finished in the form of a miniature book.
This is an extremely rare vesta case, made in rectangular book-form, with engraved decoration on both covers and a ribbed striker at the base. The interior is fitted with matches. Typical of Sampson Mordan’s late 19th-century novelty silver designs.
ConditionGeneral surface wear and marks consistent with age and use. There appears to be a minor repair to the catches.
