Description

Sterling Silver Card Case Engine Turned Edward Smith Birmingham 1852

A mid-19th century sterling silver card case of rectangular form with rounded corners, finely engine-turned diagonal decoration and applied scroll and shell border detailing.

Hallmarked Birmingham 1852 with date letter “D” and maker Edward Smith.

  • Maker: Edward Smith
  • Assay Office: Birmingham
  • Date: 1852 (Date Letter “D”)
  • Silver Standard: Sterling Silver (.925)
  • Height: Approx. 10 cm
  • Width: Approx. 7.2 cm
  • Total Weight: 69.4 grams

Of rectangular form with gently rounded corners, the case is decorated with diagonal engine-turned banding across both sides. The borders are enhanced with applied scrollwork and shell motifs to each corner and centre panels, giving the piece strong mid-Victorian character.

The central cartouche remains unengraved. The lower edge features shaped detailing in keeping with the decorative border.

The interior is plain silver gilt wash now largely worn. The hinge operates correctly and the case closes securely.

Hallmarks are clearly struck and include the Birmingham anchor, lion passant, date letter “D” for 1852, and the maker’s mark for Edward Smith.

Condition
Good antique condition.

Clear hallmarks. Hinge in sound working order. Light surface wear, minor scratches and softening to high points consistent with age and handling. Interior gilding worn as expected. No visible splits or major repairs observed.
