Description

Sterling Silver Card Case George Unite Birmingham 1868

A Victorian sterling silver card case of rectangular form with shaped borders, finely decorated and with a central cartouche.

Hallmarked Birmingham 1868 with date letter “T” and maker George Unite.

  • Maker: George Unite
  • Assay Office: Birmingham
  • Date: 1868 (Date Letter “T”)
  • Silver Standard: Sterling Silver (.925)
  • Height: Approx. 10.2 cm
  • Width: Approx. 7.3 cm
  • Total Weight: 55.8 grams

Of rectangular form with shaped and scroll-moulded borders, the case is decorated with vertical engine-turned banding across both sides. The borders are accented with applied scroll and shell detailing, characteristic of mid-Victorian Birmingham production.

The central cartouche is engraved with monogrammed initials. The lower edge is shaped in keeping with the decorative border design.

The interior is plain silver with remnants of original gilding now largely worn. The hinge operates correctly and the case closes securely.

Hallmarks are clearly struck and include the lion passant, Birmingham anchor, date letter “T” for 1868, and the maker’s mark for George Unite.

Condition
Good antique condition.

Clear hallmarks. Hinge in sound working order. Light surface wear, minor scratches and softening to raised decoration consistent with age and handling. Interior gilding worn. No visible splits or significant repairs observed.
