Sterling Silver Scottish Quaich Wine Tasting Bowl William Henry Prout 1992

A finely made Scottish sterling silver quaich, traditionally associated with friendship and hospitality, and long used as a ceremonial whisky tasting bowl. This example was made by William Henry Prout and assayed in Edinburgh in 1992.

  • Origin: Scotland
  • Maker: William Henry Prout
  • Assay Office: Edinburgh
  • Date Letter: S (1992)
  • Material: Sterling silver
  • Height: approx. 4.2 cm
  • Width (handle to handle): approx. 13 cm
  • Bowl Diameter: approx. 8.4 cm

The quaich is of classic form, raised on a circular foot and fitted with two opposing lugs, allowing it to be passed hand to hand in the traditional manner. The lugs are decorated with subtle Celtic-style ornamentation, adding interest while remaining restrained and elegant.

The bowl interior is smoothly finished and well suited for whisky tasting or ceremonial use. Clear hallmarks are struck to the side, confirming maker, assay office, and date. The overall design balances functionality with understated decoration, making it equally suitable for use or display.

Condition

Very good condition.
There is light surface wear and minor marks consistent with careful use. No dents, splits, or repairs observed. The bowl sits well and retains a pleasing overall finish.
