Description

Sterling Silver Vesta Case Match Holder Deakin & Francis Ltd Birmingham 1896

A late Victorian sterling silver vesta case by Deakin & Francis Ltd, assayed in Birmingham in 1896.

Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the case is richly decorated in high relief with scrolling foliate ornament and a diagonal reeded band running across the front and reverse. The base features a serrated striker, and the side is fitted with a suspension ring. The interior retains traces of its original dark lining.

  • Maker: Deakin & Francis Ltd
  • Assay Office: Birmingham
  • Date Letter: 1896 (date letter w)
  • Material: Sterling Silver
  • Height: approx. 5.4cm
  • Width: approx. 3.7cm
  • Total Weight: 29.2 grams

This is a well-modelled and decorative example of a late 19th century vesta case. The bold diagonal ribbed band contrasts with the surrounding repoussé foliate scrollwork, giving the piece a strong visual presence. The decoration is carried across both sides, indicating careful manufacture.

The hinged lid closes securely and aligns well with the body. The suspension ring remains intact, allowing the case to be worn on a chain as originally intended. The striker to the base is crisp and well defined.

Fully hallmarked to the inner rim for Deakin & Francis Ltd, one of Birmingham’s most respected silversmithing firms.

Good antique condition. Light surface wear and minor marks consistent with age and use. Some rubbing and wear to the dark interior lining. The hinge is sound and the lid closes properly. No significant dents or structural damage noted.
