Victorian Silver Mounted Leather Wedge Letter Box William Comyns London 1899
A late Victorian wedge-shaped letter or correspondence box with a high back and flat sloping lid. The exterior is fitted with four matching sterling silver corner mounts by William Comyns & Sons. The embossed radiating feather and roundel decoration is suggestive of peacock feathers. The separate sterling silver lock escutcheon bears the sponsor’s mark of Peacock, Mansfield & Britton, London publishers and booksellers. The interior is lined in magenta ribbed silk and divided into two deep sections for letters, envelopes and correspondence.
The box is structurally sound with age-related scuffs, scratches and areas of leather loss, particularly around the rear edges, corners and beside the silver mounts. Parts of the mounts sit slightly proud where the surrounding leather has worn. The silver has light surface marks. The interior lining remains intact with some impressions, creasing and minor marks.
