Description

Victorian Silver Plated Nautilus Shell Spoon Warmer

A Victorian silver-plated spoon warmer modelled in the form of a nautilus shell, raised on a cast naturalistic base. A decorative and practical table piece typical of late 19th-century dining ware.

  • Type: Spoon warmer
  • Material: Silver plate
  • Period: Victorian
  • Height: approx. 14.5cm
  • Width: approx. 16cm

The body is formed as a stylised nautilus shell with engraved trailing foliate decoration across the exterior. The rim is finished with a fine engraved border. The interior retains a darkened surface from age and use.

The shell is mounted on a cast rockwork base, providing stability and enhancing the piece's sculptural quality. The modelling is well defined, particularly to the base, with textured detailing throughout.

Spoon warmers were used on the dining table to keep serving spoons warm between use, commonly placed beside tureens. Nautilus shell examples are among the more decorative Victorian forms and are now collected for both display and practical interest.

Good antique condition consistent with age. Surface wear, scratching, tarnish and areas of plate wear are present, particularly to raised areas and the base. The interior shows signs of previous use. No major structural damage observed. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details.
