Victorian Solid Silver Slow Burn Vesta Case Match Holder Alexander Macrae 1871

A Victorian sterling silver vesta case of rectangular form with plain surfaces. The case is engraved “J. P. White, London” to the lid, with an additional reward inscription to the reverse. A well-made early example of a slow-burning vesta case match holder, retaining its original striker, wheel and internal wick.

  • Assay Office: London
  • Date Letter: q (1871)
  • Metal: Sterling silver
  • Length: 5.2 cm

This lighter operates via a thumb wheel striker and internal flint, with a cotton-filled chamber designed to hold petrol (naphtha). Such lighters were carried as personal accessories in the late Victorian period and are less commonly encountered than later examples.

Condition
Good antique condition, with surface wear, light scratches, and softening to edges consistent with age and use. The mechanism is present; functionality has not been tested. Interior shows expected residue from historic use.

We do not ship lighters outside of the UK, due to international shipping restrictions.
