Vintage British Paper Thickness Gauge Dial Micrometer Mercer Cased
A British Mercer precision thickness gauge for measuring paper, card, film, leather and other thin materials. It has a substantial metal body, twin finger holes and a lever-operated plunger. The main dial measures thousandths of an inch, with a subsidiary revolution counter. Thomas Mercer established his Clerkenwell workshop in 1856, initially producing marine chronometers. The company opened its St Albans factory in 1874 and later became known for precision dial gauges used in engineering and manufacturing.
The mechanism moves and the needle returns to zero when operated. Accuracy and calibration have not been professionally checked. The metal surfaces have scratches, marks and areas of tarnishing. The dial and glass have minor surface marks. The fitted case has rubbing and edge wear, with some marks to the blue lining.
