An exceptional and highly unusual late Victorian multi-function instrument in sterling silver, combining three propelling pencils, a compass, and a whistle within a single compact form.
The front features three independent sliding mechanisms, each terminating in coloured indicators (black, red, and blue), corresponding to separate pencil functions. All mechanisms extend smoothly and are in working order.
At the top is a compass housed beneath a glazed cover, complete and functioning. The body opens to reveal the internal construction and incorporates a whistle, adding to the practical ingenuity of the piece.
Fully hallmarked for 1898 and bearing the retailer’s mark for J.C. Vickery of Regent Street, this is a well-documented London retailer known for supplying high-quality novelty and luxury items. Pieces combining this number of functions are seldom encountered.
Condition
Good condition for its age, with light surface wear, minor scratches, and signs of handling consistent with use. All mechanisms are working. The compass is present and functional. No major structural issues noted. It will benefit from a light clean if desired. Sold as seen.
A scarce example of late Victorian ingenuity, combining multiple practical functions in a single silver form. Such multi-combination pieces by Hornby are rarely found complete and working.
