Description

Scarce Antique Gold Plated Propelling Pencil & Dip Pen A.W. Faber

A scarce antique gold-plated combination propelling pencil and dip pen, of compact telescopic form with engine-turned finish and decorative finial. The piece extends to reveal a dip pen fitting and retractable pencil mechanism within.

  • Maker (Barrel): A.W. Faber
  • Nib Marking: “Harranid Wing-Flow U.S.A 4”
  • Material: Gold-plated metal
  • Type: Propelling pencil with dip pen combination
  • Closed Length: Approx. 6.7 cm
  • Fully Extended Length: Approx. 11.5 cm

A finely made late 19th to early 20th century combination writing instrument. The barrel is finished in a detailed engine-turned pattern with a longitudinal viewing slot. The top is fitted with a suspension ring and decorative embossed collar.

The pencil mechanism extends via the internal slider system. The dip pen section pulls out to accept the nib, which is marked Harranid Wing-Flow U.S.A No. 4. The barrel is engraved A.W. Faber, a respected German manufacturer of writing instruments.

Compact in size, this example would originally have been carried on a watch chain or chatelaine.

Condition
Good antique condition.
General surface wear and light rubbing to the gold plate are consistent with age and use.
It looks like someone forced to open with some pliers, and left tiny dents on the body.
Nib shows age-related staining.
The mechanism is fully working, but it will require a lead.
