Description

Antique Georgian Toleware Oval Nutmeg Grater

This is a small oval nutmeg grater from the late 1700s.
It's made of sheet tin and has hinged compartments for silver nutmeg graters.
This pocket-sized folk art has the rare feature of almost all its original dark brown finish with very little wear, making it rare for a piece designed for pocket carry and use.
The top lid has a tight hinge and seals the top, locking when closed.
A piece of nutmeg can be stored in the larger hinged compartment under the top lid.
When you need to use the grater, turn it over and lift the bottom lid to expose the grater.
Grind the nutmeg, close the bottom lid, and turn the piece back over.
The ground nutmeg can then be taken from under the top cover.
The bottom also has a hinged lid, which, when lifted, exposes the grater. The grater is perforated from the bottom up to create the grill's corrugated surface.
This bottom cap has a tight hinge, fits very snugly on the base, and closes with a snap closure.

It measures about 2.5cm x 5.3cm x 2.5cm

It is in good condition for its age.
It will need a good cleaning. It comes in the original conditions as found.
