Tooled Leather Writing Slope Stationary Box Made by Carlisle and Watts C1849
This is an exceptional antique writing box made by Carlisle & Watts and located at 146 Princes Street.
The box comes with the original pair of keys and is covered with leather.
It was probably used by either a healthy lady of the house or the army officer and is believed to date from the Regency period in the early 19th century.
At the time, it was fashionable for ladies to carry their writing cases when travelling.
The writing box has an inlaid brass handle at the top with a folding carry handle, and the brass frog comes with a key and a spare. When you open the lid, it swings at an angle to create a red leather writing surface. This reveals a section for ink bottles and pens. The middle section, which has writing tablets, opens in the opposite direction and stands. Under this section, there are compartments for envelopes and writing paper.
The base has a large compartment for storing all the love letters.
It also comes with the original Inkwell and Vesta case match holder, which are usually missing.
It measures about 16cm H x 38.5cm w x 29cm D.
61.5cm opened
